그룹명 'aespa (에스파)'는 ‘아바타 X 익스피리언스 (Avatar X Experience)’를 표현한 ‘æ’와 양면이라는 뜻의 영단어 ‘aspect’를 결합해 만든 이름이다.

# Their music

In the beginning, it was not clear exactly what music it was aiming for, but to some extent this was embodied after the release of the first EP 'Savage'. Early in the debut, music was dominated by future-oriented electronic pop using strong personality synthesizers and punchy rhythms, but it is very difficult to define Espa's music as a clear-cut genre framework such as hip-hop, ballad, R&B, and electronic. What's important is that there are signs of a lot of thought during the production stage in order not to follow the girl group grammar of the standard music market called Bubble Gum Pop.

Espa's main music itself is very faithful to the group's concept of AI and the virtual world. Although SM's senior girl groups showed both serious concepts and lively or cute images, Espa focuses on embodying the group's character by presenting cool and intense music in the title song, at least not yet.

Like feature films, Espa's albums are used to enrich the SMCU brand, Espa, rather than being a theme completed only with individual discography. Since its debut, the future-oriented electronic synth-pop dance theme has been continuously continued through follow-up albums, but tracks using acoustic sessions of a separate style are often included over time. This seems to be to push ahead with a certain theme by utilizing good songs along with the limitations of the composition pool, but not to let go of the diversity and creativity of the album like Red Velvet, a senior group.

The characteristic that it is difficult to clearly understand the genre characteristics is also evident when listening to the song. It is also impressive that most of the songs presented as titles after Next Level build a unique personality that is difficult to find in reality by boldly mixing songs with completely different personalities such as electronica, hip-hop, trap, rock, and R&B. In fact, there were no songs that showed this characteristic in SM's senior singers' songs, but it was hard to say that they were the mainstream characteristics of SM. Other K-pop songs affected by this also attempted to deploy similar genres. However, from Espa, the arrangement and beat themselves are almost like a different song, and even if parts with completely different characteristics are connected, they show differences in each genre.
