□ About Seo Tai-ji

사진/서태지

Seo Tae-ji is an indispensable figure in the history of Korean music in many ways, called the cultural president as the leader of the group Seo Tae-ji and the children who rocked the 90s and the pioneer of Korean hip-hop and dance music. He is a pioneer who established rap in Korea and made young people, teenagers, and children enjoy popular culture, which was centered on middle-aged people at the time. As such, it was a fresh genre of music that had not been seen before, making all young people's senses explode. In addition, many young children who grew up watching and listening to music with Seo Tai-ji on TV were also the ones who dreamed of becoming celebrities, such as "I want to be a cool singer like Seo Tai-ji in the future and go on TV and be on stage."

In the case of dance music, there were definitely dance singers such as Nami, Kim Wan-sun, Fire Truck, and Park Nam-jung in the 1980s before the debut of Seo Tai-ji and Boys. However, unlike dance music in Korea, most of the songs were based on the rhythm of adult music (so-called "Bbongbeel") such as trot, mixed with classical Eurobeats, which were not used well now, and the dance music of the current era, based on pop music and hip-hop, was completely defined after Seo Tae-ji's appearance.

And in the case of hip-hop, Seo Tae-ji is not an authentic hip-hop rapper who made hip-hop crew, but Seo Tae-ji's rap made the idea of "I can make rap in Korean" and "Black music can succeed in Korea." After Seo Tae-ji and children's rap music was very successful nationwide, Korean hip-hop began to develop in the late 1990s. Tablo also talked about how he was influenced by the song in Kneepakdosa.

In other words, Seo Tae-ji has become a kind of root and nourishment in the Korean hip-hop world. In comparison, although the Beatles are not a hard rock or metal band, their masterpiece Helter Skelter is the same as pioneering the prototype of the hard rock and metal genres in the 1970s and 1980s. The representative songs are 'I Know', 'Haega', 'Classroom Idea', 'Comeback Home' and many others.

Since the early 1990s, it has had the largest youth fandom since the beginning of the Korean Peninsula, and it has become an icon of the era by influencing musically and non-musically the authoritative Korean society of the time, which had remnants of military culture. When introducing this artist in the media, the first word that comes at the beginning is definitely the culture president. Since 1996, when Seo Tae-ji and his children, who brought about the turmoil of the times, officially announced their retirement, they have returned to normal people for 18 years before settling in Pyeongchang-dong in order to avoid reporters. At the end of one activity period, he took a break for a while to get inspiration, worked on music, and returned home to release albums and perform. The term between albums lasts for years because it takes time to acquire and embody new genres every time, and also because it pursues terrible perfectionism in music work.

In 1989, he began his artist career as a bassist in the rock band Sinawe, a role model for Metal Kid, and in 1992 debuted in the overground with trio rap dance trio Seo Tai-ji and Boys. Legendary musician who topped the K-pop chart for 17 weeks with his first album "I Know" while promoting dance music, which was widely regarded as Itaewon club music at the time. Since then, the trio has created a syndrome in the people's society where they release albums by digesting genres of very wide spectrum, including hip-hop, ballad, electronica, thrash metal, and gangster music. Since turning solo in 1998, he has focused on rock-oriented band sound activities such as alternative rock, hardcore punk, and emo-core. Since 2008, he has published results on research that combines high-level writing and two genres (rock, electronica), his roots.

He is also widely known as a strict perfectionist in all directions in terms of musical aspects such as the completeness and sound quality of composition, arrangement, and lyrics, and the sound and concert stage composition. If you look at music, you have to work hard for six months to finish the recording, because you don't like the album you released, and as soon as the album is over, you go to a mountain house to record it, and because you don't like the mixing, you're considered an artist to complete the studio.

As mentioned earlier, Seo Tae-ji is not well known for his unique musical colors created through various genres of crossover, an all-round singer-songwriter, and his image as a "singer Seo Tae-ji," but Seo Tae-ji is also well-versed in sound engineering. When I debuted at the age of 20, I was poor to call a session, so I was in charge of engineering and programming for the first album, but after that, what I had to do became a habit, I set up a studio for my work in my company and mansion in Korea and oversaw all the work on music. Currently, his work has become a personality that only works in his hands from A to Z, and collaboration also takes care of everything unless he or she has a particularly good idea.

He also led the way in stabilizing the rights and distributing income of singers, including portrait rights, and before Seo Tae-ji, no matter how many albums they sold and sang on TV, they could not earn their own profits and had to be satisfied as given by record companies and agencies. You're a celebrity, but you don't have a car? It was like, "Pick me a car, buy me a nice house because I worked hard." Even King Cho Yong-pil and King Shin Hae-chul failed to go against this trend, but rookie Seo Tae-ji broke the tyranny of the agencies and took his fair share, and after that, the treatment of singers began to improve as everyone began to improve their treatment of singers. By the way, Shin Hae-cheol called himself a "scareful coward" and Seo Tae-ji a "failure loser" and mentioned, "That's why Seo Tae-ji deserves to win proudly and I can't beat him." But what's interesting is that Seo Tae-ji learned from Shin Hae-chul in his 20s, who was full of energy at the time, when he fought and clashed with industry officials such as broadcasters and PDs.

Lastly, this person is the owner of the name that semi-automatically follows when referring to mysticism in Korea. At the beginning of his debut, he was no different from other singers, such as showing ridiculous slapstick comedy and talking on music shows, but since the early days of his career, he has gradually closed his mouth to hundreds of girl fans who surround his home 24 hours a day, reporters who only know music. This was the beginning of a vicious cycle, and fans, reporters, and broadcasting officials lit up their eyes and contacted superstar Seo Tae-ji to make an appearance, and as a result, Seo Tae-ji had to hide more tightly. The problem ended in a brutal fairy tale in which he suddenly left the country at the young age of 24 and evaporated completely in the world. In conclusion, when an introverted artist in the corner of the room takes on the popularity that he cannot afford, he experienced all the pain that could occur personally. Although people around her say that she has changed a lot since her marriage, Seo Tae-ji still sticks to the method of not doing any activities, including performances, so conflicts with the media and pain caused by illegitimate fans seem to have a big impact.
