□ About Yu Jae-ha

In his short life at the age of 25, he passed away with only one album, but he is considered to have left a big mark in the history of Korean pop music. His debut film and posthumous work, "I Love You," has had a significant impact on the direction of the Korean pop music industry since then. Even now, it is a sophisticated and elegant album that makes you wonder if this is an album from the 80s. The vague but honest vocals, sessions knowing moderation, and simple and plain lyrics are impressive.

On June 6, 1962, he was born in Hahoe Village, Hahoe-dong, Pungcheon-myeon, Andong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the third of three sons and four daughters between his father Yoo Il-cheong [8] and his mother Hwang Young [9] of Changwon Hwang Clan. Later, he was adopted by his uncle Yu Si-mok. He is the 14th generation descendant of Yoo Seong-ryong, who served as a Yeonguijeong during the reign of King Seonjo of the Joseon Dynasty, and his religion is Catholicism, and his baptism name is Michael. After graduating from Daeil High School in Seoul, he went to Hanyang University's College of Music in 1981.

Contrary to his simple image, Yoo Jae-ha's friends, including Kim Kwang-min, testified that he was surprisingly from a wealthy family. There are various rumors, but it was actually a family of businessmen who ran a large coal mine.

I majored in pure music. There is an anecdote that the professor scolded him for copying Mozart no matter how urgent he was when he saw the song he composed for his assignment while attending Hanyang University. This means that the professor was mistaken because his music was as good as Mozart. Among the tracks on his debut album "Because I Love You", track 5 "Minuet" is completely classical.

Although he majored in classical music, he showed a special interest in popular music. In addition to composing, writing lyrics, and arranging, he was fluent in playing violin, cello, piano, guitar, keyboard, and other instruments, and set a musical goal of combining classical and jazz with popular songs in 1984 before graduating from college.

While attending Hanyang University, he began full-fledged music activities as a keyboardist for "Cho Yong-pil and the Great Birth." At this time, Cho Yong-pil first recorded Yoo Jae-ha's representative song, "Because I Love You," in his seventh album. Cho Yong-pil's "Asia Fireworks" album released in Japan in November 1984, about half a year before the release of his seventh album, was released in two versions: the Korean version and the Japanese version (芙蓉ようによ). This is the first recorded version of Yoo Jae-ha's song. However, he withdrew from the great birth because he did not get permission from the school necessary for Cho Yong-pil's Japanese performance.

Cho Yong-pil, who saw through the talent of 23-year-old blue young man Yoo Jae-ha, a member of "The Great Birth" in 1985, said, "Write a song," and Yoo Jae-ha composed more than 10 songs in excitement, but there is an episode that Yoo Jae-ha was disappointed because he wrote only one song. However, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter once talked about this episode in connection with Kim Hyun-sik, not Cho Yong-pil. Refer to the relevant paragraph of Kim Hyun-sik below for details. It's one of the stories in the music industry.

Song Hong-seop, a bassist, arranger, and producer who was the leader of the great birth at the time, told a slightly different story. When Song Hong-seop visited Yoo Jae-ha's house, Yoo Jae-ha asked him to introduce his song to Cho Yong-pil, and Cho Yong-pil, who received the score, became interested in Yoo Jae-ha's song (which was rare at the time), and recorded it. The songs Yoo Jae-ha gave Cho Yong-pil were "Because I Love You" and "Our Love". However, Yoo Jae-ha said that he was disappointed when he heard "Because I Love You" recorded by Cho Yong-pil because it didn't match the emotion of the song he thought.

One of the songs in the album, the score of "Our Love," is the version given to Cho Yong-pil. If you look at the lyrics of the second verse at the top of the score, you can see a different part from the lyrics currently sung. Yoo Jae-ha's "In My Arms" is included in Lee Moon-se's 1983 album, "Lucky Day." If you look it up on YouTube, the sound quality is not good.

Just before Ha-ga recorded her first album, her acquaintances asked Yoo Jae-ha to play the music she composed, and whenever she listened to Yoo Jae-ha's music, she always said to those who were listening to her music, "I know, it's terrible..." It is said that he complained.

There are many other episodes. According to the testimony of a woman who observed Yoo Jae-ha's album recording process (refer to the masterpiece scandal), it was a very shy and quiet impression. Then, when he drank a little, he became more talkative and cheerful. It is said that Yoo Jae-ha continued to improvise whenever he drank and went to a bar with a piano. Until the owners can't stand it and tell me to leave...

Meanwhile, Kim Young, president of Dong-A Entertainment, who almost debuted Yoo Jae-ha, introduced Yoo Jae-ha's personality as a bright and cheerful type compared to a comedian in an interview with a media company, and he was so popular among women that people around him said he would look like a playboy when they first saw him.

Han Young-ae revealed Yoo Jae-ha's anecdote, which is said to have always wanted to communicate with popular musicians. When the fan letter came to Yoo Jae-ha, he told him to collect all of them, and when asked what he did yesterday, he said he stayed up all night writing a reply to the fan letter, indicating Yoo Jae-ha's cheerful and innocent personality.

As a Catholic, he attended the Catholic Church, and it is said that Yoo Jae-ha played a demo tape before releasing an album to the owner of a record store in front of the cathedral. The store owner said that "my reflection in my heart" was the best, and Yoo Jae-ha also said that "my reflection in my heart" was the best.

Then, on the evening of October 31, 1987, right after the release of the first album, he suddenly announced that he was going to an alumni meeting that he had not been able to attend for some reason.

The next day, on November 1, while returning home with a Hyundai Pony 2 driven by a drunk friend, he died at the age of 25 when the car violated the Jungang Line on Gangbyeonbuk-ro near Hannam-daero, Yongsan-gu, and collided head-on with an oncoming taxi.

After his death, he was buried in the Catholic Yongin Park Cemetery in Osan-ri, Mohyeon-myeon, Yongin-gun, Gyeonggi-do (currently Mohyeon-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si). According to a person who met Yoo Jae-ha just before he passed away, Yoo Jae-ha was disappointed with the completeness of his first album and could feel his strong desire to make it a better album if he could release his second album. A friend surnamed Sung, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, also died in the accident, and Yoo Jae-ha's bereaved family filed a claim of KRW 416 million against Han Do Call Taxi, a taxi company that collided with the drunk driver's father surnamed Sung.

Yoo Il-cheong, a 65-year-old father at the time of Yoo Jae-ha's death, and Hwang Young, a 61-year-old mother, were also shocked by the sadness of losing their children. As you can see from her age, Yoo Jae-ha was born as a very late child by these days, and it remains regrettable that her son scolded her for being noisy because she likes music, her mother said in an interview with a monthly magazine in 1988. At that time, Yoo Jae-ha's fans were heartbroken by the photo of his father, who was staring silently at his son's music performance in the corner of the room. The corresponding magazine scan material. And Yoo Jae-ha's father passed away two years later.

In the case of Lee Moon-se, Yoo Jae-ha was not a famous singer in her lifetime, but as soon as she heard the news of her death, she cried and delivered the news. It is also because of personal acquaintance. In Yoo Jae-ha's song "The Past Days," Lee Moon-se immediately participated in the chorus, and Yoo Jae-ha wrote a song to Lee Moon-se before he died. "I Don't Know It Yet" is the song of Lee Moon-se's third album, "With You Forever." At the time of recording his third album, Lee Moon-se was not the best singer of the time, but a disappointing singer due to the failure of his first and second albums. Since Lee Moon-se's hit is after his third album, it is right to say that he participated in opening the prelude with an outstanding song called "Forever with You" in the ranks of Lee Moon-se's golden albums (3, 4, and 5th albums).

Shortly after Yoo Jae-ha's death, "Because I Love You" and "Past Days" suddenly appeared on the radio so much that I was really bitten. It didn't get much attention in life [20] Rather, it gained late popularity due to its rising recognition. But that's why Yoo Jae-ha has a reputation today, so this is Yeon if it's Yeon.

He is considered one of the pioneers who opened the door to Korean-style ballads today. Music critic Im Jin-mo also evaluated MBC FM4U's "Korean Pop Music, Walking the Times" in 2008, saying, "Korean ballads come to Lee Young-hoon and open, and Yoo Jae-ha raised the horizon of ballads to the world of creation, composition and arrangement." In the 2021 SBS Legendary Stage Archive K, Lee Young-hoon and Yoo Jae-ha were evaluated as the beginning of the Korean ballad genealogy, especially Yoo Jae-ha added pop elements to ballads, popularized major chords instead of forging, and introduced bridges.

One of the reasons why it is said that Korean pop music history is divided before and after Yoo Jae-ha is because of his musical attempts. As a graduate of the music composition department, which was rare at the time, his music gave a very different feeling from existing popular music, and in other words, it can be seen that the so-called mulberry that existing pop songs had uniformly disappeared from his music. Most of his songs give a rather sad and mournful feeling, but they are not as new as previous K-pop songs. Rather, it is sad, but it often gives a clean feeling. Considering that even Lee Young-hoon's music, the two original singers of the K-pop ballad industry, was not able to escape from that "pong-ki," we can see how advanced Yoo Jae-ha had.

In other words, he pioneered a genre that was completely different from the trend of the Korean music industry at the age of mid-20s and became mainstream, which is why he is highly regarded today. Simply put, it is remarkable that Cho Yong-pil was considered one of the two early days when he succeeded in breaking the popular genre, which was not completely successful, as a mainstream pop ballad since the late 1980s. As you know, Korean ballad is still the mainstream genre of popular music along with hip-hop and dance idol music (although there have been genre mixes such as steady change and development, rock ballad, etc.). Of course, they did not set up any large agency or raise junior musicians themselves, but they did not have as much influence as large agencies today, but their influence is never small in that they gave artistic inspiration.

As a result, of course, the influence on junior singers, especially ballad singers and workers in the 1990s, was also significant.
