2008년 당시 프랑스 대통령 니콜라 사르코지와의 결혼 이후 프랑스 영부인으로 국내에도 많이 알려졌었으며 2번이나 이혼한 사르코지의 여성편력만큼 화려한 남성편력이 재조명 되기도 했다.
카를라 브루니는 카를라 질베르타 브루니 테데스키(Carla Gilberta Bruni Tedeschi)라는 이름으로, 이탈리아-프랑스 혼혈인 피아니스트 마리사 보리니(Marisa Borini)와 이탈리아인 알베르토 브루니 테데스키 (Alberto Bruni Tedeschi) 사이에서 태어났다. 카를라 브루니의 모계 증조부는 프랑스 제3 공화국의 하원 의원이었다. 그의 딸이 이탈리아 남자와 결혼해서 낳은 자식이 마리사 보리니다.

브루니 가문은 토리노의 타이어 회사 재벌로 피렐리에 이어 이탈리아 타이어 업계 2위 기업인 CEAT를 경영해 상당히 부유하게 자랐으며 오래된 성을 방이 40개 딸린 저택으로 개조해서 살았다. 유년 시절 기억으로는 카라얀과 마리아 칼라스를 집으로 초청해 가족 음악회를 열었다고 한다.

하지만 2008년에 브루니 본인이 밝힌 바에 따르면, 아버지는 친부가 아니라고 한다. 친부는 이탈리아계 브라질인 클래식 기타리스트 마우리치오 레메르트(Maurizio Remmert)로, 토리노에서 콘서트를 하러 왔을 때 브루니의 어머니와 처음 만났다고 한다. 레메르트는 1947년생으로 브루니 어머니와 만날땐 19살에 불과했다고 한다. 이 내연 관계는 총 6년 동안 지속되었으며 이때 생긴 자식이 바로 브루니이다. 즉 브루니는 둘의 사생아인 셈. 정작 브루니 본인은 이 사실을 유년기 시절에는 알지 못했고 1996년에나 어머니를 통해 알게 되었다고 한다. 물론 큰 충격을 받았으나 친부와 서로 왕래하며 잘 지내고 있다고 하다.
70년대 납의 시대, 자본주의 타파를 외치는 이탈리아 극좌 테러 조직인 붉은 여단이 브루니 집안을 공격 대상으로 삼아 7살때부터 프랑스로 이주하여 성장하였으며 1986년 19살의 나이로 패션 모델로 데뷔, 나오미 캠벨, 클라우디아 쉬퍼, 신디 크로포드 와 함께 1980년대와 90년대 모델계를 그야말로 주름잡았다.

입생로랑, 프라다, 샤넬, 디올, 돌체 앤 가바나 등 주요 브랜드의 모델로 활약했으며 특히 잔니 베르사체가 생전에 아낀 모델 중 하나로 90년대 베르사체 주요 뮤즈 중 하나였다. 4대 보그 중 미국만 제외하고 영국, 이탈리아, 파리 보그 커버를 장식했다. 모델스닷컴에서는 카를라 브루니를 레전드(Legends) 모델로 분류하고 있다.
이후 1997년부터 모델계를 은퇴하고 가수로 전향했다. 2002년 발매한 1집 [Quelqu'un M'a Dit]는 전 세계적으로 200만장이 팔리면서 성공적인 데뷔를 치뤘고, 지금까지도 싱어송라이터로서 왕성하게 활동하고 있다. 1집은 프랑스에서 140만장 이상의 판매고를 올려 프랑스 대중음악 역사상 13번째로 많이 팔린 여성 가수의 앨범이다.
