□ About Mr. Sunshine
tvN's Saturday and Sunday drama set in the late Joseon Dynasty, which aired from July 7, 2018 to September 30, 2018.
What is unique is that the drama itself was produced in a 21:9 aspect ratio like a movie. However, since tvN's broadcast itself is 16:9, it is broadcasted with a letter box added to the 16:9 standard. This is why there is a black band up and down in the drama. However, only the last scene came out as a full screen.
This drama also began streaming on July 7, 2018 for Netflix service countries around the world in the form of exclusive works on Netflix. However, the special broadcast on September 22nd is not serviced.
Mr. Sunshine's theme is "Is it worth defending even if it is a society that has caused pain to its members?" In this work, the Japanese Empire, which is an aggressor, is described as a very vicious and manipulative force. However, the victim, Joseon (the Korean Empire), is never described positively. Rather, the repressive reality of Joseon and the backward social structure are depicted starkly. The characters of Joseon, whether good or evil, come out as characters who have not escaped from the old worldview. Even Lee Jung-moon and Ko Sa-hong, who are described as integrity loyalists, do not feel sorry for Yoo-jin or Dong-mae's past, but rather call him a "child of heaven," "a person who betrayed his country for his rise," and show that he is obsessed with outdated customs.
In particular, the description of the characters is largely related to the subject. The main characters in the work are all characters with a hurtful past due to the pre-modern system of Joseon. Eugene Choi, the main character, was a slave, the lowest class in society, so he lost his parents and went through a crisis of life going back and forth, and went abroad and succeeded from the bottom. Koo Dong-mae was also born as a butcher, the lowest class, and suffered all kinds of discrimination and abuse before fleeing to Japan and growing up. Kudo Hina was also sold by her father to a Japanese rich man. Although not the main character, Jang Seung-gu, Go Ae-shin's teacher and righteous army, also lost his father in Joseon and was abandoned by the country.
Even those who were free from oppression have one burden and shackles of their hearts. Along with Eugene Choi, another main character, Go Ae-shin, is the highest vested interest in Joseon, but because she was a woman, she had to take advantage of basic self-development or education, not to enter society. Kim Hee-sung also belongs to the highest vested interests, but he suffers from deep guilt because of his grandfather and biological father who abused his position to commit all kinds of evil acts.
As the past and the resulting wounds of these characters are illuminated, questions are constantly raised by borrowing the mouths of the characters in the work. Eugene Choi's question to Go Ae-shin in the middle of a frozen river shows another theme consciousness of the work implicitly and directly. "Is the Joseon you want to save a place where both slaves and butcher can live?""
Of course, it does not end only at the line where this question is raised, but the more it reaches the second half of the work, the clearer the answer and conclusion are presented. The main characters of the drama all decide to fight for Joseon. The Joseon that they essentially want to save here is not a "royal state Joseon" or "Joseon as a society," but Joseon as a "space to live with people around me." In addition, Yoo-jin and Dong-mae are determined to protect the space with them while staying in the community around Ae-shin and going through various events, even though they were abandoned by the state and society of Joseon.
